The indigenous groups of the Atacama desert have survived from pre-columbian (spanish conquest) times. Commanities of hunters, gatherers, cattle herdsmen and shepherds, cultures like the Aymara, Quechua, Likan Antai or Atacamena, have always lived in the oases and in the Andes mountains.
Although with the evolution of time today´s communities have somewhat changed their way of life, the conceppts of the ancient art and the use of materials taken from the land can still be seen in the old buildings, the crafts, music dances and rituals which are present among local people today.
